What is plant trailer finance?

Plant trailer finance is funding for a trailer built to carry machinery such as excavators, skid steers and rollers, secured against the trailer. Plant trailers are a common first finance for Australian trade businesses because they cost far less than the machine they carry but are essential to moving it.

For an owner-operator with a mini excavator or skid steer, transport is a recurring cost that quickly outweighs the price of a trailer. A single float movement can cost several hundred dollars, so a trailer used twice a week often pays for itself within a couple of years. Tilt-bed designs remove the need for ramps and are safer to load with tracked machines.

Because plant trailers are inexpensive, the practical way to finance one is usually alongside the machine. If you are buying a mini excavator, ask the dealer to include the trailer on the same invoice so it all settles under one contract at the same rate. Bought separately later, a trailer under about $10,000 can be hard to finance because it falls below many lenders’ minimum amounts.

How lenders assess plant trailer finance

Plant trailers often sit below a lender’s minimum funding amount on their own, so they are commonly bundled onto the same contract as the machine they will carry. Where financed alone, lenders look at build quality, ATM rating, brake type and whether the trailer is registered. Established businesses are usually approved on light documentation. Australian-built trailers from known manufacturers value better than imported no-name units. Private sales need PPSR clearance and, for registered trailers, a transfer of registration.

New or used

New tandem and tri-axle plant trailers are affordable and widely bought; used trailers are cheap but should be checked carefully for chassis and brake condition.

Before you buy

  • Check the ATM rating against your machine plus attachments and fuel — buyers routinely underestimate the real travelling weight.
  • Make sure your tow vehicle’s towing capacity and tow ball download rating actually match the loaded trailer.
  • Electric brakes are cheaper but hydraulic or air over hydraulic handles heavy loads better; check what your tow vehicle supports.

Commonly financed

  • Sureweld tilt plant trailer
  • TAG tandem plant trailer
  • Workmate tilt trailer
  • PBL Trailers tri-axle plant trailer
  • Belco tilt bed trailer

Ways to finance a plant trailer

Key terms

What is plant trailer finance?

Plant trailer finance is a secured loan or lease used to buy a machinery-carrying trailer, with the trailer as security. Terms usually run 36 to 60 months, and the trailer is often funded on the same contract as the machine it will carry.

What is ATM on a trailer?

ATM stands for aggregate trailer mass — the maximum total weight of the trailer plus its load when not coupled to the tow vehicle. Exceeding the ATM is illegal and can void insurance, so it should be checked against your machine’s real operating weight.

Browse all questions →

Can I finance a plant trailer with the machine it carries?

Yes. A plant trailer is usually financed on the same contract as the mini excavator, skid steer or roller it carries, which is the cheapest way to fund it and gives you one repayment. Bought on its own, small trailers are financed as equipment or sometimes suit a line of credit because of fixed fees.

What is the minimum amount for plant trailer finance?

Several lenders finance equipment from around $5,000 to $10,000, so most plant trailers qualify on their own. Below that, fixed fees make a small loan expensive relative to the price, so a business line of credit or bundling the trailer with a machine is often better value. Your broker will tell you which is cheaper.

Can I finance a used plant trailer?

Yes. Used plant trailers are financed with a PPSR clearance and registration, and lenders are relaxed about age because trailers last for decades. Check the brakes, drawbar, ramps and axle ratings, and confirm the trailer’s ATM suits the machine you carry and the vehicle towing it.

Can a new landscaping or hire business finance a plant trailer?

Yes. Plant trailers are a modest, easily resold asset, so many lenders fund new ABNs with a clean personal credit file and a small deposit, especially when the trailer is bundled with a machine. Established businesses are usually approved low-doc within a day.

Do I need a deposit for equipment finance?

Often no deposit is required, particularly for established businesses buying standard assets from a dealer. A deposit is more likely where the business is new, the asset is older or specialised, the credit profile is weaker, or the amount is large relative to turnover. Deposits typically range from around 10% to 30% in those cases. Putting money in reduces the amount financed and can improve the terms offered, but it is not always necessary.

What fees are normally charged on equipment finance?

The common ones are an establishment or documentation fee charged at settlement, a monthly account-keeping fee, and a PPSR registration fee for recording the lender's interest in the asset. A brokerage fee may also apply, which we disclose to you in writing before anything is submitted. Some agreements include an early termination or break cost. Fees vary by lender and are typically a modest part of total cost compared with the interest, but they should still be compared.

How large a balloon can I set?

Lenders publish maximum residual or balloon percentages that fall as the term lengthens, because the asset is worth less at the end of a longer term. For a vehicle, a common pattern is up to roughly 50% on a two-year term, reducing to around 20% to 30% on a five-year term. The ATO also sets minimum residual values for finance leases. A larger balloon lowers monthly repayments but increases total interest and leaves a lump sum to deal with at the end.

Is hire purchase still used in Australia?

It is far less common than it once was. Under hire purchase the financier owns the asset and you hire it, with ownership transferring automatically after the final instalment. Since the GST changes that made chattel mortgage more attractive for businesses accounting on a cash basis, most equipment lending is written as a chattel mortgage or lease instead. Some lenders still offer commercial hire purchase, and your accountant can advise whether it suits your circumstances.

What is PPSR registration and why does the lender do it?

The Personal Property Securities Register is the national register of security interests in personal property, including vehicles and equipment. When a lender finances an asset, it registers its interest so the security is publicly recorded and its priority is protected if the asset is sold or the business fails. It also means a buyer searching the register will see the finance. The registration is released once the contract is paid out, and a small registration fee is usually passed on to you.

How does a balloon payment work on a chattel mortgage?

A balloon is a lump sum left to pay at the end of a chattel mortgage, which lowers the regular repayments during the term. For example, a 30 per cent balloon on a $100,000 vehicle leaves $30,000 to pay at the end, so the monthly amount is calculated on $70,000 plus interest on the full balance. Balloons are commonly set between 0 and 40 per cent depending on the asset and term, and at the end you can pay it out, refinance it or sell the asset to clear it. A balloon reduces monthly cost but increases total interest, so your broker shows both figures side by side.
