In plain English

What is caravan finance?

Caravan finance is a consumer loan used to buy a touring caravan, pop-top, off-road van or motorhome, secured against the van. It is regulated consumer credit in Australia, so lenders must verify your income and expenses and confirm the repayments are suitable before offering the loan.

Caravanning has grown steadily in Australia, and the market has broadened from simple pop-tops to heavy off-road vans with independent suspension, lithium batteries and solar. That capability comes with weight, which is where most buyers get caught: a van that exceeds what the tow vehicle can legally and safely pull is a serious problem, and the numbers are easy to misread.

On the finance side, caravans behave well. They hold value, are easy to identify, and are straightforward for a lender to secure, which usually means a rate well below an unsecured personal loan. Because this is regulated consumer credit, the lender must assess affordability against your actual income and expenses. Your broker will lay out the comparison rate and total cost so the decision is made with full information.

How lenders assess caravan finance

Caravans are good consumer security because they hold value and are easy to identify and recover. Most lenders will fund vans up to around 15 years old at the end of the term. Off-road and full-size touring vans from established Australian manufacturers value better than imported or older units. Motorhomes are assessed partly as vehicles, so kilometres matter as well as age. Private sales require a PPSR check and payment to the registered owner. As consumer credit, income and expense verification applies.

New or used

Used caravans hold value strongly in Australia and are widely financed; new vans carry warranty but shed value in the first two to three years.

Before you buy

  • Check your tow vehicle’s braked towing capacity and GCM against the van’s ATM before you buy, not after.
  • Look for water ingress around windows, hatches and the front and rear seams; it is the most common and costly caravan defect.
  • Weigh the van loaded at a public weighbridge to confirm you are within legal limits with gear, water and gas aboard.

Commonly financed

  • Jayco Journey and Silverline
  • New Age Manta Ray
  • Kedron off-road caravans
  • Coromal and Windsor pop-tops
  • Avan Aliner camper caravans

    Identify the asset

Type, make, model, year and condition, and whether the purchase is from a dealer or a private seller.

  2. 02

    Set deposit and term honestly

Your broker models negative equity across the term so the deposit and length reflect how long you will keep it.

  3. 03

Income and expenses are verified under responsible lending rules, the PPSR is cleared, and the seller is paid directly.

Documents lenders commonly ask for:
  • Photo ID and proof of address
  • Payslips and 3 months of bank statements
  • Sale contract or dealer invoice with HIN or VIN

The lender makes the final credit decision. Available options depend on your circumstances and the lender’s assessment.

Ways to finance a caravan

Key terms

What is caravan finance?

Caravan finance is a consumer loan secured against a caravan, pop-top or motorhome. Terms usually run 36 to 84 months and rates are typically lower than unsecured personal lending because the van is held as security.

What is ATM on a caravan?

ATM is the aggregate trailer mass — the maximum legal weight of the van including everything loaded in it. It must sit within your tow vehicle’s braked towing capacity and the combination must stay within the vehicle’s gross combination mass.

Browse all questions →

How long can I finance a caravan for?

Up to seven years is standard, matching a caravan’s long life and keeping repayments manageable on higher-value vans. Shorter terms cost less in total interest. Off-road vans, motorhomes and campers are all financed the same way, secured against the van.

Can I finance a used caravan from a private seller?

Yes. Private-sale caravans need a PPSR check to confirm no money is owing, proof of the seller’s ownership, registration and usually an inspection, and the lender pays the seller directly. Most lenders finance vans up to about 15 to 20 years old at the end of the term.

Can retirees or self-employed people get caravan finance?

Yes. Lenders assess retirees on superannuation, pension and investment income, and self-employed buyers on tax returns, notices of assessment or bank statements with some lenders. A clean credit file, a deposit and a sensible loan-to-income ratio help. A broker matches you to lenders that suit your income type.

Is dealer finance the cheapest way to finance a caravan?

Not usually. Dealer finance is convenient but is generally one lender’s product with a commission built in, and comparison rates can be well above what specialist leisure lenders and banks offer. Getting pre-approval through a broker before you visit the dealer lets you negotiate on the van rather than the finance.

Can I finance a caravan, boat or motorbike for private use?

Yes. Leisure asset lending is available for caravans, camper trailers, boats, jet skis, motorbikes and horse floats, secured against the asset itself. Because these are bought for private use, the loan is regulated consumer credit with responsible lending obligations and a comparison rate. Terms are commonly up to seven years, sometimes longer for larger caravans and boats. Lenders consider the asset's age and type as well as your income and existing commitments.

How does boat or caravan finance work?

A leisure asset loan is a secured consumer loan where the boat, caravan, motorbike, jet ski or camper trailer is the security, which keeps the rate lower than an unsecured personal loan. Terms run from one to seven years, repayments are fixed, and a balloon can be set to lower the monthly cost. Lenders quote a comparison rate and assess affordability under responsible lending rules, and the asset must be insured for the term.

How much can I borrow for a boat, caravan or motorbike?

Leisure asset loans commonly range from $5,000 to $150,000 or more for large caravans and boats, with lenders financing up to the full purchase price for well-qualified borrowers and often including registration, insurance and accessories. The amount depends on your income and commitments under responsible lending rules and on the asset’s value. A deposit lowers the repayment and can improve the rate.

Can I finance a used boat or caravan from a private seller?

Yes. Private-sale boats, caravans and bikes are financed with a PPSR check to confirm no finance is owing, verification of the seller, and usually an inspection or valuation. Most lenders set an age limit at the end of the loan, which varies by asset type and is often longer for caravans than for jet skis. Allow a few extra days compared with a dealer purchase for the checks.

Do I have to insure the boat or caravan?

Yes. Lenders require comprehensive insurance on a secured leisure asset for the life of the loan, with the lender’s interest noted on the policy, and evidence is needed before settlement. Premiums can often be included in the amount financed. Your broker can point you to insurers who cover the asset type.

How quickly can boat or caravan finance be approved?

Conditional approval is often given within 24 to 48 hours of a complete application, with settlement to the dealer within a day or two of signing. Private sales take a few days longer for the PPSR check and inspection. If you are buying at a boat show or from a dealer with a deadline, tell your broker and approval can be arranged in advance.
