What is camper trailer finance?

Camper trailer finance is a consumer loan used to buy a soft-floor, hard-floor, forward-fold or hybrid camper trailer, secured against the trailer. It is regulated consumer credit in Australia, so the lender must verify your circumstances and disclose the rate, fees and total repayments upfront.

Camper trailers occupy the ground between a tent and a caravan. Soft-floor and forward-fold campers are light, tow easily behind a mid-size four-wheel drive and cost far less than a van. Hybrids sit at the top of the category with hard walls, internal beds and full off-grid systems, and their prices now overlap with entry-level caravans, which is worth thinking about before you buy.

Financing is simple regulated consumer credit secured against the trailer. The amounts are modest, so pay attention to fees relative to the loan size and choose a term that does not stretch far beyond how long you realistically plan to keep it. Your broker will present the comparison rate and total repayments across the panel so you can see the real cost rather than a weekly headline figure.

How lenders assess camper trailer finance

Camper trailers are modest-value consumer assets that hold value reasonably well. Lower-priced soft-floor campers can fall below some lenders’ minimum loan amounts. Hybrid campers, which sit between a camper and a caravan in price and capability, are treated much like caravans. Age limits typically require the trailer to be under 15 years at the end of the term. Private sales need a PPSR check and payment to the registered owner. As consumer credit, income and expense verification applies to every application.

New or used

Used campers are plentiful and depreciate slowly after the first few years; new hybrids and hard-floor campers carry warranty and the latest suspension and battery systems.

Before you buy

  • Set up and pack down the camper before you buy — a design that takes forty minutes will stop you using it for one-night stops.
  • Check the suspension, coupling and chassis if you intend to tour off road; a road-spec camper will not survive corrugations.
  • Confirm water, battery and solar capacity against how you actually camp, since retrofitting these later is expensive.

  • Sale contract or dealer invoice with HIN or VIN

The lender makes the final credit decision. Available options depend on your circumstances and the lender’s assessment.

Ways to finance a camper trailer

Key terms

What is camper trailer finance?

Camper trailer finance is a consumer loan secured against a camper trailer. Terms usually run 24 to 72 months, the loan is regulated under Australian consumer credit law, and rates are generally lower than unsecured personal lending because the trailer is security.

What is a hybrid camper?

A hybrid camper is a camper trailer with hard walls and an internal sleeping area, combining a caravan’s weather protection with a camper’s off-road capability and smaller footprint. Hybrids are heavier and more expensive than fold-out campers and are financed much like caravans.

Browse all questions →

Can I finance a camper trailer or hybrid camper?

Yes. Soft-floor and forward-fold campers, hybrid off-road campers and slide-ons are financed as leisure assets secured against the camper, with amounts from around $8,000 and terms of up to seven years. Annexes, solar and accessories bought with the camper from the dealer are included.

Can I finance a used camper trailer privately?

Yes. Private-sale campers need a PPSR check, proof of ownership and registration, and the lender pays the seller directly. Most lenders finance campers up to about 15 years old at the end of the term, and recognised Australian builders are the easiest to finance.

What do I need to apply for camper trailer finance?

Identification, proof of income such as payslips or tax returns, details of the camper and seller, and your licence. Most applications are approved within a day or two, with settlement to the dealer or seller a day or two after signing. Pre-approval before you shop lets you negotiate on the camper rather than the finance.

Is a secured camper loan cheaper than a personal loan?

Usually, yes. A loan secured against the camper attracts a lower rate than an unsecured personal loan because the lender has security, and it is far cheaper than a credit card. For very small amounts an unsecured loan can be simpler. A broker compares both for your camper.

Can I finance a caravan, boat or motorbike for private use?

Yes. Leisure asset lending is available for caravans, camper trailers, boats, jet skis, motorbikes and horse floats, secured against the asset itself. Because these are bought for private use, the loan is regulated consumer credit with responsible lending obligations and a comparison rate. Terms are commonly up to seven years, sometimes longer for larger caravans and boats. Lenders consider the asset's age and type as well as your income and existing commitments.

How does boat or caravan finance work?

A leisure asset loan is a secured consumer loan where the boat, caravan, motorbike, jet ski or camper trailer is the security, which keeps the rate lower than an unsecured personal loan. Terms run from one to seven years, repayments are fixed, and a balloon can be set to lower the monthly cost. Lenders quote a comparison rate and assess affordability under responsible lending rules, and the asset must be insured for the term.

What leisure assets can be financed?

Boats and outboard engines, caravans, camper trailers and motorhomes, jet skis, motorbikes and scooters, off-road buggies and quad bikes, and trailers. New assets from dealers are the simplest; used assets from dealers and private sellers are financed with a PPSR check and usually an inspection or valuation. Boat packages with the trailer and motor can be financed together.

How much can I borrow for a boat, caravan or motorbike?

Leisure asset loans commonly range from $5,000 to $150,000 or more for large caravans and boats, with lenders financing up to the full purchase price for well-qualified borrowers and often including registration, insurance and accessories. The amount depends on your income and commitments under responsible lending rules and on the asset’s value. A deposit lowers the repayment and can improve the rate.

Why does depreciation matter for leisure asset finance?

Boats, caravans and jet skis can lose value faster than cars, particularly in the first few years, so lenders are careful that the loan balance does not sit above the asset’s value for too long. That influences the maximum term, whether a deposit is asked for and how large a balloon they will allow. A modest deposit and a term that matches how long you will keep the asset keeps you ahead of the depreciation curve, which your broker explains for the specific asset.

Can I finance a used boat or caravan from a private seller?

Yes. Private-sale boats, caravans and bikes are financed with a PPSR check to confirm no finance is owing, verification of the seller, and usually an inspection or valuation. Most lenders set an age limit at the end of the loan, which varies by asset type and is often longer for caravans than for jet skis. Allow a few extra days compared with a dealer purchase for the checks.
