What is jet ski finance?

Jet ski finance is a consumer loan used to buy a personal watercraft and its trailer, secured against the craft. It is regulated consumer credit in Australia, so the lender must confirm the repayments suit your circumstances and disclose the rate and fees before you sign anything.

Personal watercraft are popular across Australian coastal and inland waterways, and the market has moved toward larger, more comfortable three-seat craft rather than stand-up skis. Registration and licensing requirements vary by state, and most jurisdictions require a specific personal watercraft licence and enforce speed and distance rules more strictly than for boats. Where you can launch and store the craft is worth checking before you buy, because ramp and parking access varies widely.

Financing is simple in structure. The craft and trailer are funded together on one consumer loan secured against the asset. Because the amounts are modest, pay attention to fees relative to the loan size and to the term — stretching a $20,000 ski over five years costs considerably more in interest than four. Your broker will show the comparison rate and total repayments so the trade-off is clear.

How lenders assess jet ski finance

Personal watercraft sit at a low value point, so some lenders apply a minimum loan amount. The trailer is normally included on the same contract, which helps the deal reach that minimum. Age limits typically require the craft to be under 10 to 15 years old at the end of the term. Salt water use and engine hours are the key condition factors. Private sales require a PPSR check and payment to the registered owner. As consumer credit, income and expense verification applies to every application.

New or used

New craft carry warranty and the sharpest rates; used skis are plentiful but engine hours and salt water exposure make condition checks essential.

Before you buy

  • Ask for engine hours and whether the ski has been used in salt water and flushed after every outing.
  • Make sure the trailer is included in the sale and the finance, since buying one separately later is awkward and often unfundable.
  • Budget for registration, licensing and storage; in most states a personal watercraft licence is required and separate from a boat licence.

Commonly financed

  • Sea-Doo GTI and RXP-X
  • Yamaha WaveRunner VX and FX
  • Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra 310
  • Sea-Doo Spark
  • Yamaha SuperJet

Ways to finance a jet ski

Key terms

What is jet ski finance?

Jet ski finance is a consumer loan secured against a personal watercraft and its trailer. Terms usually run 24 to 60 months, and the loan is regulated under Australian consumer credit law with full disclosure of the rate, fees and total repayments.

Do I need a licence for a jet ski in Australia?

Most states and territories require a specific personal watercraft licence in addition to or instead of a general boat licence, and the craft must be registered. Requirements and minimum ages differ by jurisdiction, so check with your state maritime authority.

Browse all questions →

Can I finance a jet ski with the trailer included?

Yes. The trailer, cover and accessories bought with the jet ski from the dealer are included in the loan, secured against the jet ski. Amounts from around $10,000 qualify, and terms of up to five years are common.

Can I finance a used jet ski?

Yes. Used jet skis from dealers and private sellers are financed with a PPSR check, proof of ownership and registration, and lenders look at hours, age and service history. Most lenders finance jet skis up to about 10 years old at the end of the term.

What does a jet ski cost to finance each month?

As a guide, a $25,000 jet ski and trailer over five years costs roughly $500 to $560 a month depending on the rate and your credit profile. Use the calculator on this page for your figures and your broker firms up the number with a real quote.

Do I need a boat licence to get jet ski finance?

The lender does not require it, but a personal watercraft licence is required to ride in most states and insurance is required from settlement, so arrange both before delivery. Lenders assess income, credit history and the deposit.

Can I finance a caravan, boat or motorbike for private use?

Yes. Leisure asset lending is available for caravans, camper trailers, boats, jet skis, motorbikes and horse floats, secured against the asset itself. Because these are bought for private use, the loan is regulated consumer credit with responsible lending obligations and a comparison rate. Terms are commonly up to seven years, sometimes longer for larger caravans and boats. Lenders consider the asset's age and type as well as your income and existing commitments.

How does boat or caravan finance work?

A leisure asset loan is a secured consumer loan where the boat, caravan, motorbike, jet ski or camper trailer is the security, which keeps the rate lower than an unsecured personal loan. Terms run from one to seven years, repayments are fixed, and a balloon can be set to lower the monthly cost. Lenders quote a comparison rate and assess affordability under responsible lending rules, and the asset must be insured for the term.

What leisure assets can be financed?

Boats and outboard engines, caravans, camper trailers and motorhomes, jet skis, motorbikes and scooters, off-road buggies and quad bikes, and trailers. New assets from dealers are the simplest; used assets from dealers and private sellers are financed with a PPSR check and usually an inspection or valuation. Boat packages with the trailer and motor can be financed together.

How much can I borrow for a boat, caravan or motorbike?

Leisure asset loans commonly range from $5,000 to $150,000 or more for large caravans and boats, with lenders financing up to the full purchase price for well-qualified borrowers and often including registration, insurance and accessories. The amount depends on your income and commitments under responsible lending rules and on the asset’s value. A deposit lowers the repayment and can improve the rate.

Why does depreciation matter for leisure asset finance?

Boats, caravans and jet skis can lose value faster than cars, particularly in the first few years, so lenders are careful that the loan balance does not sit above the asset’s value for too long. That influences the maximum term, whether a deposit is asked for and how large a balloon they will allow. A modest deposit and a term that matches how long you will keep the asset keeps you ahead of the depreciation curve, which your broker explains for the specific asset.

Can I finance a used boat or caravan from a private seller?

Yes. Private-sale boats, caravans and bikes are financed with a PPSR check to confirm no finance is owing, verification of the seller, and usually an inspection or valuation. Most lenders set an age limit at the end of the loan, which varies by asset type and is often longer for caravans than for jet skis. Allow a few extra days compared with a dealer purchase for the checks.
